Occupational Health Department was created along with the establishment of an institute called Institute of Hygiene and Preventive Medicine, presently named as Institute of Public Health. It was recognized by international agencies like ILO, UNICEF and WHO. WHO supported maximum and awarded few fellowships like for MSc (Occupational Health), Diploma in Industrial Hygiene and PhD (Occupational Health). Five different fellows of WHO, qualified from abroad in Occupational Health and served at different positions in this department. Before the establishment of medical inspectorate of factories, the staff of this department officiated as medical inspector of factories for thirteen years i.e. from 1964 to 1977. At present this department is involved in teaching and training postgraduate and undergraduate studies in the field of occupational health.

- Postgraduate research projects for submission of their thesis/dissertations
- Publication of research papers in national and international journals
- Consultancy services rendered for the eradication of occupational health hazards
- Conducting projects sponsored by international agencies
- The workshops on different occupational issues
