Bacteriology Department

In the department of Bacteriology there are two different sections functioning to provide quality analytical services, support to the public health and environmental activities and targeting the fundamental research. All the tests in this lab are done free of cost and the patients from all over the Punjab are facilitated.
The sections of bacteriology department:

Our main objectives are:

  • Teaching and Training paramedical and postgraduate students
  • Supervising dissertations of post graduate students
  • Targeting fundamental research
  • Provincial TB reference lab
  • Routine microscopy for AFB
  • TB culture & sensitivity
  • Imparting standardized microscopy trainings for AFB and capacity building of district and sub-district laboratory staff from all over Punjab
  • Planning and implementation of external quality assessment for sputum smear as per national guidelines
  • Supervision and monitoring of intermediate district laboratories for sputum smear microscopy
  • Technical support and assistance to intermediate district laboratories
  • Policy development for lab improvement and development of laboratory network in DOTS strategy


Services offered as Bacteriologist to the Government of Punjab are mentioned as below:

  • Routine lab tests
  • To establish an efficient system for epidemic investigation and diagnosis in the Punjab (cases referred from EDO, DHOs and DHQ hospitals)
  • Surveillance and research related to epidemics of infectious diseases and their control
  • Field investigation of outbreak of communicable diseases
  • To provide confirmatory tests for districts’ laboratories
  • To assist technically districts’ laboratories during epidemic control
  • Planning technical assistance for activities of districts to control various public health diseases
  • Provision of transport media for microbiological specimens to the districts
  • Culture of water samples referred from laboratory of epidemiologist for strain identification
  • Advise the districts about the control of various epidemics and communicable diseases
  • Provision of SOPs to the districts regarding sample collection and sample transportation

Functional Dog Bite Center (Anti-Rabies Centre)

  • Provision of treatment to the patients as per schedule recommended by the WHO
  • Management of such patients includes pre and post exposure prophylactic anti rabies vaccination. Active and passive immunization with cell culture vaccine and anti rabies immunoglobulin
  • Data collection and reporting of rabies patients

Training of paramedics from all districts of Punjab (from PC-I Health Department) in 2009-2010 on following topics:

  • Laboratory safety
  • Microscopy
  • Quality assurance
  • Sample collection
  • Provincial TB Reference Lab

Provincial TB Reference Lab started functioning in Bacteriology Department, IPH in April, 2003. Many different activities are being done in the TB Reference Lab.

Following different types of sputum smear microscopy trainings are provided to the districts, sub-districts laboratory staff and non-laboratory staff from 20 districts of Punjab for their capacity building in collaboration with National TB Control Program and Punjab Provincial TB Control Program:

  • 10 days initial training (Microscopist)
  • 03 days refresher training (Microscopist)
  • 10 days DLS training (District Laboratory Supervisor)
  • 03 days NLS training (Non Laboratory Staff)

Patients are referred from AIDS Control Program as well as from the community. HIV tests are also being done for foreign students for admission in medical colleges. Tests are done by two methods (Rapid & ELISA). and the trainings are given to laboratory staff of all districts of Punjab for performance of Rapid & ELISA tests in collaboration with AIDS Control Program.

The trainee staff is selected by the district government in collaboration with Punjab TB Control Program.

Lab Services

Following tests are routinely done free of cost:

  • Tests for Dengue (NS1, IgG & IgM)
  • Hepatitis B & C (Strip method, ELISA and PCR)
  • Any field investigation of outbreak of communicable disease is also done
  • surveillance and research related to epidemic of infectious disease and their control
  • during any outbreak transport media for microbiological specimens are provided to the districts on their request
  • SOP’s regarding sample collection and transportation for culture of various specimens are prepared and provided to all district of Punjab

All tests are performed free of cost depending on availability of kits. Mainly PCR test (Qualitative & Quantitative) is done for Hepatitis on provision of Kits by Hepatitis Control Program.
